Why Chael Sonnen-Anderson Silva Is A Bigger Freak Show Than Mike Tyson-Jake Paul

Over the weekend, it was confirmed that Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva have signed on the dotted line.

This time, though, the former UFC fighters will compete in a boxing ring.

Sonnen vs. Silva III is set for June 15 from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The two 40-plus-year-olds will compete under the Spaten Fight Night promotions.

“Oh Anderson, yoohoo,” Sonnen told ESPN. “It’s me again. See you June 15.”

The fight comes at an interesting time for the sport of boxing. Mike Tyson, a former heavyweight champion, will meet Jake Paul on July 20 live on Netflix.

Sonnen vs. Silva, though, comes off as even more a freak show than that because of their past.

Chael Sonnen Is No Boxer At All

Sonnen was a standout wrestler who used that and his toughness to earn multiple UFC title shots. He is no elite striker like Silva, a member of the UFC Hall of Fame and former middleweight champion.

In fact, “The Spider” has taken to the sport of boxing and has gone 3-2-1 including a decision loss to Paul in 2022.

Sonnen, meanwhile, retired in 2019 after winning 30 of his 48 career MMA fights.

For as great as that record is, just eight of those 30 wins came by knockout or TKO. In fact, his last win by strikes was in 2007 vs. Kyacey Uscola.

Silva has earned two knockout wins in his boxing career and 23 more inside the cage.

In boxing, everyone has a puncher’s chance. Tyson at least has that if he catches Paul. Sonnen really has no chance whatsoever.
