Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Pavin Smith recorded a six-RBI perfromance, including hitting a grand slam, as the Arizona Diamondbacks crushed the St. Louis Cardinals 14-1 on Tuesday night.

After being sent down to Triple-A Reno last week and called up Tuesday, Tommy Henry improved to 1-1 on the season and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 3-for-5 for the D-backs (12-13). Arizona totaled 15 hits and every batter in the lineup had at least one.

Phoenix native Nolan Gorman was 2-for-4 and Wilson Contreras homered for the only Cardinals (10-14) run. Steven Matz and Zack Thompson both surrended seven runs apiece in the loss.

Pure Diamondback Domination

On the second batter Henry faced, Contreras crushed a home run to center field for St. Louis to go up 1-0. Contreras came out of the game after the fifth inning as he was visibly experiencing hand discomfort.

From there on out though, a combination of an offenive explosion and Henry dialing in powered the Diamondbacks to the win.

In the third, Gurriel Jr. hit an RBI single before Christain Walker powered a three-run homer to left center as the Diamondbacks tied and took the lead, 4-1.

Matz and Thomspon would be roughed up in the fifth inning with Gabriel Moreno and Randal Grichuk both driving home an RBI each.

With the score already sitting at 6-1, Smith and Kevin Newman blew the game wide-open.

Smith connected on a two-run double and Newman smashed a two-run blast to the left field’s third deck for a 10-1 score.

Arizona’s demolition didn’t stop but rolled over into the sixth as they loaded the bases for Smith.

Back in the batters box, the Diamondbacks’ designated hitter smoked a grand slam to extend the margin to 14-1. This was the second time that Smith hit a grand slam at Busch Stadium, the last being almost a year ago on April 17, 2023.

On the other end, Henry pitched six innings, allowed just the homer to Contreras, five hits and collected six strikeouts. Logan Allen finished the last three innings of the ballgame and gave one hit en route to his first save of the season.

Both teams will round out the three-game series against one another on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. PT.
