Colts sign former SEC standout QB
Kellen Mond. Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Given their sudden need at the quarterback position, Indianapolis Colts are turning to a familiar name for college football fans.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Tuesday that the Colts have signed QB Kellen Mond to their practice squad. Mond was among several veteran signal-callers that Indianapolis worked out this week (including Ian Book, Trace McSorley and Holton Ahlers).

The 24-year-old Mond was a four-year standout at Texas A&M. He served as the starter during all four seasons on the Aggies and had his best individual performance in 2018 when he passed for 3,107 yards and 24 touchdowns. Mond also led Texas A&M to a 9-1 record and a fourth-place finish in the final AP poll as a senior in 2020.

After graduating, Mond was a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft (No. 66 overall) by the Minnesota Vikings. Mond has failed to see much action since then, though, making just one appearance for Minnesota (in 2021). He was waived by the Vikings in 2022, signed with the Cleveland Browns for that season, but was also waived without ever playing in another game.

With Anthony Richardson looking set to miss significant time, the Colts need more bodies on the depth chart behind new starter Gardner Minshew. Former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is still around too, but now Mond will be joining him in Indy’s QB room.
