Veteran Quarterback Named Top Target For Green Bay Packers
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers look set for years to come with Jordan Love as their starting quarterback. But, the team could still look to bring in an addition for depth purposes, as things are shaky behind him.

Right now, the backup to Love is second-year player Sean Clifford. A fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Penn State product beat out Danny Etling and Alex McGough for the No. 2 job last offseason.

Etling was released and McGough took over as the No. 3 quarterback. But, McGough has been transitioning this offseason to become a wide receiver. That was revealed after the 2024 NFL Draft when the Green Bay Packers used a seventh-round pick on Michael Pratt out of Tulane.

Many evaluators believe that Pratt has a bright future in the NFL and will be at least a No. 2 for a long time. He will challenge Clifford for that spot during the offseason, but that shouldn’t deter the Packers from looking to make some additions.

Given the expectations the team is facing this season, it would be very risky to enter the 2024 season without a proven backup behind Love. Should anything happen to him, the team won’t be in a position to compete with Clifford or Pratt having to be a starter.

That is one reason why Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report believes that the Green Bay Packers should look to bring in veteran Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill is one of the additions Ballentine believes the Packer should pursue following the draft.

“The Packers are too good to rely on a completely inexperienced backup option and Ryan Tannehill could be a solution. The 35-year-old was 39-24 as the Titans starter over the last five years and has 151 career starts.

His days as a starter are over. The market has spoken as far as that is concerned. However, he still has enough in the tank to be a good veteran backup who could win a few games with the Packers surrounding talent,” wrote Ballentine.

Tannehill remains a free agent after his contract expired following the 2023 season. The Tennessee Titans, his previous team, have moved on officially as they signed Mason Rudolph earlier in the offseason to join Will Levis and Malik Willis on the roster.

The Green Bay Packers would benefit from having someone with that kind of experience on their roster behind Love. As we’ve seen with so many teams previously, an injury to a starting quarterback will derail a franchise if there isn’t a contingency plan in place behind them.
